A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring the department of correction to report on sexual abuse and harassment of staff and ensure that staff have access to mental health treatment resources.

Summary

This bill would require the Commissioner of Correction to report annually on alleged incidents of sexual abuse and harassment of Department of Correction (DOC) and Correctional Health Services (CHS) staff by incarcerated individuals or other staff that occurred in the previous year. The Commissioner would also have to report annually on DOC’s investigations of these incidents. Additionally, the Commissioner would be required to review the information collected and report annually on any responsive updates to DOC’s policies concerning sexual abuse and harassment of staff. The Commissioner would have to submit these reports to the Speaker of the Council and the Board of Correction and post these reports on DOC’s website. This bill would also require the Commissioner to ensure that staff have access to mental health treatment resources. The Commissioner would be required to publicize resource availability to staff.
