Summary

This bill would create a commission to recommend new names for Rikers Island. The commission would consist of seven members, representing the cultural affairs sector and civil rights organizations, appointed by the Mayor, the Speaker of the Council and the Public Advocate. The commission would be required to submit a report detailing its renaming recommendations to the Mayor, the Speaker of the Council and the Public Advocate six months after the final member is appointed. The commission would dissolve after submission of the report.
